Equine-assisted psychotherapy is an exciting alternative form of therapy that utilizes horses and is experiential in nature. By first participating in activities with horses and then processing the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that emerge, insights are gained which generate self-esteem, improve communication skills and establish emotional well-being.
Equine-assisted psychotherapy is conducted by Walter E. Jacobson, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist, and an Equine Specialist who is responsible for the safety of both the patients and the horses. It does not involve riding or horsemanship. All activities take place on the ground. Equine-assisted psychotherapy can address a variety of behavioral issues, including attention deficit disorder, alcohol and substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, anxiety disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, anger management, co-dependency, relationship and marriage problems, and self-esteem issues. Equine-assisted psychotherapy is effective as a stand-alone, short-term psychotherapeutic intervention or as an adjunct to traditional forms of therapy that are already in place. Although single sessions can provide useful insights and growth, a structured program of eight weekly 90 minute sessions will generate more profound and enduring improvements.
